The Twenty-Eighth Pope

Saint Caius

An illustration of Saint CaiusPope St. Caius (283-296) – On his crypt, the name of this pope begins with the Greek letter gamma. Therefore, Gaius may be the more accurate expression of the pope's name. Nevertheless, little that is factual is known about him.

His movements after death are more verifiable. Pope Urban VIII re-interred the remains of the pope from his place of burial near the cemetery of Callistus to the Church of Saint Caius. When the church was destroyed, the remains were taken to the chapel of the Barberini princes for final burial.
