Pope Romanus (897–?) – Although by the late ninth century one would have thought that a fair amount of historical information would be available on a person occupying the papal throne, this was not the case regarding the reign of Pope Romanus. The date of death of Pope Romanus and the place of burial are unknown. There are enough facts to indicate that Pope Romanus was a cardinal and attached to the Church of Saint Peter in Chains (San Pietro in Vincoli). After that, speculations concerning the short reign of Pope Romanus, his policies, and theological influence are all one can do. There is a possibility that he was deposed by certain political factions and ended his life as a monk.
