The 135th Pope
Benedict VII

Pope Benedict VII (974–983) – Eschewing the political in favor of the spiritual, Pope Benedict promoted monasticism, prohibited many ecclesiastical practices regarding buying and selling of offices and other favors. Because he was supported by the emperor Otto II, Pope Benedict acquiesced to certain desires of the emperor to establish dioceses and place a candidate of the emperor to be bishop there as well as taking measures in favor of the emperor's wishes to promote Latin dioceses in opposition to Byzantine controlled areas of Italy.

Upon the death of Pope Benedict VII, he was buried the ancient basilica of Santa Croce in Rome. Perhaps, because it was believed that Pope Benedict once visited Jerusalem and returned with a relic of the True Cross.
